That’s why children like the tooth rabbit

Our dental practices are staffed by teams of dentists and assistants specially trained in the treatment of children.

Our aim is to enable children and parents to have a stress-free visit to the dental practice and a positive attitude towards dental care right from the start. This begins with the child-friendly design of our rooms and continues with the treatment procedures and sensitive advice.

When the children reach their teenage years, we offer age-appropriate treatment methods and specialized advice. We are experts particularly in areas such as tooth correction (orthodontics, orthodontics).

Zahnhase.ch has also been running the Bettingen Riehen school dental practice since 2014 to provide even better support for children’s dental health.

The Zahnhase can be found exclusively in Riehen Schmiedgasse, Birsfelden and Bad Säckingen.

All young patients are cordially invited to continue visiting the dental bunny there. The toothy rabbit and his friends are looking forward to it.

This is what it looks like with the tooth rabbit

Prophylaxis begins with children

In children, prophylaxis begins with the first teeth. Then at the latest is the time for a consultation.

The topics are:

  • Nutrition
  • Care of teeth
  • Habits such as thumb sucking
  • Development phases
  • Controls and treatment phases

Regular dental checks and oral hygiene measures are a prerequisite for healthy teeth for a lifetime.

Nutrition

The main causes of tooth decay are soft drinks, a high-carbohydrate diet, constant sucking on the bottle and poor oral hygiene. We therefore have specially prepared educational material for every child.

Brush teeth

Since parents are role models for their children, we include the parents and recommend brushing their teeth together at the beginning.

Child and age-appropriate toothbrushing utensils and toothpaste can also have the desired motivating effect.

The teeth should be cleaned after each main meal and also after each sugary snack between meals, but at least twice a day.

X-Ray

We use modern, low-radiation X-ray equipment. All areas (e.g. in the bone, under the tooth enamel, between the teeth) that are not visible to the naked eye can be seen.

X-ray technology is used to detect caries between the teeth at an early stage.

The first small x-rays should be taken for children between the ages of 7 and 9. If the dentition is free of caries and there is no suspicion of caries susceptibility, it is sufficient to take the next caries pictures in the permanent dentition between the ages of 11 and 13 years.

Besides the X-rays , an overview image (Orthopantomography / OPT) can also be used to diagnose caries to assess the development of the teeth and the tooth systems

Before the first visit to the dentist

You should show confidence and serenity and make your child feel positive. Your child should feel that it is something completely normal and useful.

Negative phrases such as “It doesn’t hurt” or “You don’t need to be afraid” should be avoided because such sentences arouse fear and suspicion in the child. Also, do not use anxiety-inducing words like injections or drill.

It can help your child if you read them a book about their first visit to the dentist or look at the positive pictures on our website. Of course, your favorite cuddly toy can come along to the appointment.

For our treatment instruments, we use terms that the child knows and which have a positive connotation.

The equipment we use for the treatments also have names which the child understands, so there are no “injections” but “sleep beads and glitter beads”, the “drill” is called an “electric toothbrush”, the lamp is the sun. We put our teeth to sleep, brush, shower and apply cream.

Anesthesia

Anesthetize pain-free

By numbing the surface (ointment) and a computer-assisted, controlled anesthetic technique (the magic wand), anesthesia can be painless.

Treatment under laughing gas

Laughing gas can also be used to support dental treatments.
Laughing gas has a calming effect and reduces the sensation of pain.
The treatment with nitrous oxide does not have any physical limitations after the treatment.

Treatment under general anesthesia

General anesthesia is indicated for larger or protracted procedures, for very anxious children or children with intellectual disabilities.
A team of anesthetists experienced with children takes care of your child’s education and welfare.

Dental accident

It can happen that teeth break off, chipped, moved or even knocked out as a result of an accident. If you suspect a concussion (dizziness, vomiting, unequal pupils), please contact your general practitioner immediately or contact the hospital. Any dental accident should be reported to the dentist and insurance company. Even minor injuries can lead to long-term consequences.

What to do?

  • Report any dental accident to the dentist immediately
  • What happened, when, how, where?
  • Age of the person / child?
  • Deciduous or permanent teeth affected?
  • Even minor accidents can result in complications.

Correct behavior is crucial.
