Get to know our practice for holistic dentistry.

Physical complaints do not always show up at their source. Diseased teeth can trigger disturbances in the rest of the body and are not infrequently the cause of chronic diseases. Holistic dentistry reveals these relationships through special diagnostic procedures and offers appropriate therapies for recovery.

Holistic dentistry is used in our practices in Riehen train station and Bad Säckingen offered.

What is holistic dentistry?

Holistic dentistry does not regard teeth and mouth as an isolated system, but rather as part of the entire body.

This approach can be used to explain mutual interactions: For example, chronic headaches can affect old ones Amalgam fillings or rheumatic complaints are caused by an inflammation in the jaw.

Conversely, the frequent occurrence of Canker sores in the mouth may be due to a food intolerance that otherwise has little effect. The holistic dentist deals with precisely these interrelationships and suggests appropriate therapies based on them.

Types of treatment

Herd healing

Herder diseases are disorders that do not occur in the same place as their cause. Diseased teeth, chronic inflammation of the jaw or foreign bodies in the jaw can trigger complaints in distant parts of the body. In such cases the focus, e.g. a root-filled tooth, must be removed.

“After a clean-up, my chronic high blood pressure normalized.”

Revitalization and prevention

Restorative and strengthening measures for metabolism, soft tissue and bones after focal restoration. Prevention through recall systems with oral hygiene, check-ups and information.

«I had painful watering eyes for a long time. It is over since a canine restoration. “

Filling therapies

Amalgam fillings consist of a mixture of silver, tin, zinc and copper, mixed with mercury. This can lead to health problems such as headaches, weakness or dizziness. In such cases it is advisable to replace existing fillings with biologically compatible materials.

“I suffered terribly from a metallic taste in my mouth – until my fillings were replaced.”

Functional orthodontics

Orthodontic early treatment in children with mixed teeth to eliminate muscular malfunctions and promote structures that promote natural development of the teeth. Devices that are passive in the oral cavity (e.g. Bionator) are used in contrast to traditionally fixed braces.

Holistic test methods

1. Dental assessment

Precise dental examinations are a prerequisite for a holistic patient observation. Depending on the case, this includes an exact assessment with dental x-ray, orthopantomogram (panoramic image), vitality tests and a temporomandibular joint examination.

2. Mouth flow measurement

A galvanic oral current measurement provides information about any current flow that can occur between different materials in the oral cavity. It is typical to pay attention to metals such as gold, silver and amalgam alloys.

3. Tooth test

Dental focus diagnosis aims to identify the relationship between the symptoms that arise and their causes. For this purpose, it is examined whether there are foci or teeth in the dental arch that put a strain on the body.

4. Affected organs test

An analysis of the blood values helps to identify organs, metabolic processes and pollutants that burden the body and cause symptoms to the patient.

5. Individual material testing

Determination of the biological compatibility of tooth materials and implants.

6. Discussion of possible therapies

The findings and tests provide information about the possible origin and causes of the complaints. The results are discussed with the patient and the necessary holistic, medical and dental therapies are determined in the appropriate time sequence.

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD)

Do you often wake up with jaw pain? Does it ever happen that your TMJ becomes blocked? Do you have pain chewing or problems opening your mouth? Are you grinding your teeth? Many people suffer from disorders or even pain in the chewing, head and neck muscles and the jaw joints.

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) could be the cause of your symptoms. This is a malfunction of the masticatory system.
Alternative terms for this painful disease of the masticatory muscles and / or the temporomandibular joints are myoarthropathy or the technical term Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD).

The good news: CMD can be treated individually using a variety of methods.

Symptoms of Craniomandibular Dysfunction (CMD)

  • Temporomandibular joint pain
  • Pain in the masticatory muscles
  • Limited mouth opening or jaw mobility
  • Blockages when opening and closing the jaw
  • Jaw noises such as jaw clicking or friction related to pain
  • Hypermobility of the lower jaw
  • Grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw
  • Headache or migraine
  • Earache, tinnitus

CMD – therapy and treatment options

Pain in the jaw and face area affects many patients in their quality of life. It is often difficult for those affected to pinpoint the symptoms. In such cases, the most important task of the attending (dental) doctor is to determine the exact cause. For this purpose, an examination is carried out and, depending on the indication, x-rays are taken.

Rail

Treatment with occlusal splints can in many cases have a positive effect on symptoms due to craniomandibular dysfunction. Checks by the dentist prevent any damage.

“When I ate, my jaw joint cracked and hurt. Thanks to splint therapy, physiotherapy and new behavior patterns, I can eat pain-free again. “

Psychosomatic therapy

Many studies show that in affected patients, psychosocial aspects often have to be taken into account in therapy. This is especially true when there is no apparent physical cause for the disorder. Interdisciplinary care is often necessary, which promises very good therapeutic success.

«My front teeth have loosened from playing the trumpet. A stabilizing splint strengthened my teeth again so that I didn’t have to give up my job as a musician. “

Physical therapy

As with other illnesses (for example back pain), physiotherapy and physiotherapy can alleviate and reduce the pain. Different treatment techniques are used, depending on the individual situation.

Medication

Medicinal measures can be used for a limited time, for example in the case of inflammatory relapses, severe pain and muscle tension. The medication should be administered as indicated and the symptoms should be relieved quickly. Long-term medication should be avoided.
